Crap I have to go on vacation…

Yea! Crap… Family reunion, sweet. I am leaving just as things start to get interesting in the garden. Plus I am going for 3 weeks. Ugh! If things go wrong, I won’t be able to fix it.

For now the kale is doing great and I have some small fruits growing on my winter squash. We will see. If they die, off to the chickens they go.

I love my chickens. Not just because they give me eggs and fertilizer! But with them around, I don’t feel as guilty if food goes south. With my two kids it is very hard to have them eat all their food, and they drop it on the floor sometimes. As long as it is not chicken, I can make it into chicken feed! Then the chickens will take it and make it into more food!

To keep the chickens happy, I’d like to make a chicken run. Unfortunately I will have to wait until I get back from my vacation to the Great Lakes State. I will be gone for 3 weeks and my garden will run amuck. Here’s how I plan to help keep that from happening!

    1. Weed hard 2 to 3 days before I go

    2. Give weeds to chickens

    3. Fertilize 1 to 2 days before I go

    4. Prune summer squash 3 to 4 day before I go

    5. Move the vines of the pumpkins as best I can so they explode with growth in the right area

    6. Pick all I can 2 days before I go.

    7. Freeze whatever I can.

My husband will be here for two weeks longer than I , so he will be able to water and pick things as needed. The problem with him picking is he is as color blind as a person could be… Can’t tell a green tomato from a red one. So I have no idea how that is going to work.

I have several tomatoes that are green on the vine right now. They will most likely ripen while I’m gone. Not going to lie, I’m kind of excited to see how things take off while I am gone. Or I mean I guess they could die.

That might happen and I’m telling myself it is ok. This is my first time. I have been getting better with that mind set. That I am not terrible in all I do just because some plants die. Some won’t, and that’s ok too. I try to remember: My kids are healthy and happy, I have my home, and my garden is growing. Those are what is really important, not every single plant.
