Garden harvest 2017

My first garden harvest in Greenfield! I was happy that I got a little one, I was worried I would not get a harvest at all. It was time to harvest because the frost was threatening to come in, and you have to get all these plants in before the frost. My husband is so happy because the allergies that he is suffering from will go away. Pollen thy eternal enemy.

Read on for some pictures and thoughts from this year. Hope you enjoy!

So I started by pulling up the basil.

Then went to pull up my celeriac. I notice a hole in the raised bed as I pulled up the vegg. Not like a hole left by the vegetables, but one dug into the ground. Then the crushing disappointment of the sight of a half eaten celeriac, ick.

I think I have voles? They made a nice little village in my garden. Ate potatoes, onions and a melon. I didn’t know they where there because the garden got so weedy. Oh well, I’m not going to let it keep me down. I was so happy to finally pull up all the weeds and give them to my chickens. They love it pecking them to bits looking for bugs and seed. I also gave the chickens the veggies the voles chewed on, so no loss to me there. Yum!

R.I.P Veggies

I did get my carrots, and a ton of leeks. I could make at least 3 pots of leek and potato soup. I have gem corn (e.g. Indian corn) that I harvested. I did not harvest the onions, cabbages, and kale in the garden because they are cold hearty, and will keep growing for a couple more weeks. I am going to pick my pumpkins tomorrow, if the raccoons don’t eat it tonight. I forgot about them, went grocery shopping, and got back when it was too dark to go out there.

Bummer… but all in all I have produced 25 pounds of veggies. I’ll be able to keep them for the winter, and know they are full of home grown goodness. That is my Victory of the day. Let me how you count your Victories!
